Kundalini Yoga, often referred to as the “Yoga of Awareness,” is a spiritual and physical practice that seeks to awaken the latent energy at the base of the spine, known as Kundalini or Kundalini energy.

Based on ancient disciplines, it blends various yogic techniques including breath control (pranayama), postures (asanas), meditation, and chanting of mantras. The main difference with other forms of yoga is that Kundalini Yoga’s primary aim is to cultivate a state of heightened awareness and spiritual well-being, through an organic and energetic approach to the practice bringing about a transformative experience for practitioners.

Originating from the Tantric traditions of ancient India, Kundalini Yoga was brought to the Western world in the late 1960s by Yogi Bhajan. It gained popularity for its holistic approach, integrating physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions to bring about a harmonious balance within the individual.

A fundamental premise of this practice is that everyone possesses a reservoir of untapped potential energy, Kundalini energy. Through specific yogic practices, this energy is awakened and channeled upwards through the chakras, or energy centers, along the spine, balancing each one of the chakras. When this energy reaches the crown chakra, it is said to lead to a profound state of spiritual enlightenment and consciousness.

A less metaphorical and mystical approach to the above-stated is that when the practitioner works to balance the psycho-emotional features each chakra addresses, progressively gains self-knowledge and consciousness of her/his true nature. Once balance, and knowledge, have been reached the person can unleash her/his full potential. In short, once you have worked on your issues and challenges, you know your strengths and find purpose and meaning, you will have all you need to go through life with strength, trust, and confidence.
